樹齢 600 年の「中之条のサイカチ」は牧場(まきば)の名残とされています。莢に含まれる石鹸のような成分は馬を洗うのに使われました。もう一つの特徴である鋭い棘は身を守る為に進化したと考えられます。一方、私たち人間は牙や爪ではなく、道具を使うように進化しました。また、見えない疫病や天災を恐れるようになり、中之条のサイカチが鬼門除けに植えられているように、植物の棘はよく魔除けに使われたようです。

The 600-year-old Nakanojo Saikachi tree is believed to be a remnant of a horse ranch. The soap-like substance in the bean pods was used to wash horses. Another feature, the sharp thorns, were thought to have evolved to protect oneself. We humans, on the other hand, evolved to use tools rather than tusks and claws. We also came to fear invisible plagues and natural disasters. Plant thorns were often used to ward off evil spirits, and as in the case of Nakanojo’s Saikachi, planted to ward off demons.
