永劫の匱(はこ) EIGO-NO-HAKO

吾妻地域は中世より各地の勢力がせめぎ合う場所であった。街道から離れた赤岩地区には、戦乱で荒廃した地域からの避難⺠が流れ着くこともあった。彼らは自分たちの日常を紡ぐため、近隣の村から譲り受けたありあわせの材料を使い、ささやかな祈りの場をつくったという。
永劫の匱(はこ)は、戦禍の避難民が自ら作り上げた自然発生的な祈りの施設。匱(はこ)とは、木製の大きな入れ物を意味している。改修を重ねた偶然で現在の木質耐火部材と類似した構造となり、享和 3 年(1803)の赤岩大火にも焼け残ったと想定した。

The Agatsuma area has been a place of rivalry between various forces since the Middle Ages. Evacuees from war-torn areas sometimes drifted to the Akaiwa district, far from the highway.
In order to weave their own daily life, they created a place of modest prayer using materials they got from the neighboring villages. EIGO-NO-HAKO is a facility for self-initiated prayer cre-ted by war-displaced refugees. HAKO means a large container made of wood.
It is believed the building underwent renovations to enhance its structure, incorporating elements similar to those found in today’s fireproof buildings. These improvements enabled it to survive the Great Akaiwa Fire of 1803.
