フィンランド人リッタ・イコネンと日本人せきなつこのアーティストデュオ、セキ・イコネンは、2023年の中之条ビエンナーレにおける「道祖神」のインスタレーション発表後、中之条に再び戻ってきます。
彼らの中之条での探求は、旅人を守り、地域をつなぐために道の辻に祀られる道祖神の石像を探すことから始まりました。これらの石像は、しばしば固く抱き合う姿で表現され、山を越えて旅する村人たちの絆を象徴し、危険な道のりにおいて安らぎと連帯をもたらします。
イコネンの着用可能な彫刻と、セキのフォトモンタージュを通じて、彼らは土地や世代を超えた人々のつながりを可視化するポートレートシリーズを生み出します。道祖神の「旅の伴侶」としての役割にインスピレーションを受けながら、地域の伝統や共同体の暮らしにアーティストとして介入することで土地のナラティブを明るみに出そうと試みます。

The Finnish-Japanese artist duo Natsko Seki and Riitta Ikonen (Seki Ikonen) return to Nakanojo following their collaborative exhibition at the Hirozakari Brewery for the Nakanojo Biennale 2023.
Their exploration of Gunma began with a search for the region’s Dōsojin statues-guardian deities placed at crossroads to protect travellers and connect communities. These stone figures, often depicted in a tight embrace, symbolise the bonds between villagers journeying across the mountains, offering comfort and companionship on treacherous routes.
Through Ikonen’s wearable sculptures and Seki’s photomontages, they create portraits and interactive sculptures that visualise human interconnectedness across landscapes and generations. Returning to Nakanojo, Seki and Ikonen continue to draw from the Dōsojin’s role as companions, immersing themselves in local traditions and communal life.
