旅の神様を追って Chasing Road Spirit

出発点は、数年前に大阪の国立民族学博物館で出会った道祖神。木片の一部が削られて墨で顔が入れてあり、素朴だが魅力的で、制作は中之条町 1978 年。
ビエンナーレへの参加で中之条に来てみると、木の道祖神は六合の伝統で、現在はほぼ絶えて来ている事がわかった。一方で、山道には現在も数十の石の道祖神が残る。仲良く二人寄り添う様子の道祖神から、人が人と織りなす深い結びつきや、自然との関わり方が伝わってくる。プロジェクトを通じて出会った人々について、花や山、養蚕や畑、また仲間との関わりをポートレート作品にした。

Our collaboration started with a wooden Dōsojin, a road spirit encountered in a museum in Osaka. Exploring both Dōsojin’s
historical role and contemporary significance led to this series of sculptures and photomontages presenting people of Nakano-
jo with their companions.

The wooden Dōsojins are made from branches and logs, discovered whenever we stopped to look at stone Dōsojins along the mountain roads. The tight embrace of these stone figures, how one squeezed the other’s shoulder firmly, showed clearly the profound connections we humans form with traditions, nature, and one another and still remind travellers of companionships
past, present, and future.
