In the midst of the Boshin War during the waning days of the Edo period, opportunistic individuals took advantage of the weakened shogunate, proclaiming to bring about social justice while plundering affluent households. These marauders, known as “Uchikowashi,” began to strike with increasing frequency, gradually advancing northward,
with their sights set on Nakanojo. Even the local magistrate, overwhelmed by fear, fled the area. Left with no choice but to defend themselves, the village officials devised a plan to seek the guidance of Oguri Kozukenosuke, a former high-ranking official of the shogunate who had retired to Gontamura in Takasaki. Meanwhile, Oguri himself had become a target of the Uchikowashi due to baseless rumors that he had absconded with a large sum of money from the shogunate.
This is a tale of the unfortunate genius Oguri Kozukenosuke, and the resilient individuals who valiantly confronted the changing times. It depicts the Theatre Akatsuki version of the late Edo period blues drama.
