To all the artists and friends I've met in Nakanojo. We used to travel to meet and work together. eat and drink together happily exchanging ideas and experiences During stay in Nakanojo But now I can't come to meet. for many reasons And most importantly, during the time of the Covid-19, that everyone has to protect themselves. not to get the virus and other hardships in life I therefore write to all of you with my best wishes and hope that everyone is safe. and we will meet again next time.

Yes, my biggest surprise at Nakanojo was that. Of course I know about the Japanese food and a bit about the Japanese culture and social manners, but the humor I didn't know before I came. So a reason to come back.

　人の歴史を辿ると、ポジティブにもネガティブにも、それまでの暮らしがガラッと変る転換点（＝分水嶺）がいくつもあるとわかりました。
　私たちは今、その分水嶺の一つに立っています。どうやってこれを越えていくのか。越えた先の世界を良いものにすることができるのか。考えて、考え続けた先に未来を開く力があると信じています。

私にとって中之条の里は心の疲れを癒してくれるもの、次に頑張れるエネルギーの源となっています。そこで得た経験や思い出は命を形づける要素となり、明日の自分へと繋がっていくのです。

パンデミックによって人との距離は物理的に離れてしまいましたが、どんなに離れてしまっても、心のつながりは共にあると思っています。今回はリモート参加となりましたが、共に活動できたことを本当に嬉しく思います。

一日も早いコロナ禍の収束と、多くの方が訪れる元気なビエンナーレの里に戻ることを願ってやみません。

Nakanojo:
I saw a small story when an old bent woman walked down the liquid street. Noticing something, she stopped at a tree, and bowed. The grace of this gesture drew me to the tree, to what she had seen, and nestled in the bamboo grass at the treefeet, was a pair of abandoned gloves. They still held the shape of their wearer. Something intimate and naked about that, and the beauty of how the old woman acknowledged that they represented someone’s hands, a life.

The event of Nakanojo Biennale stays deep not only my heart, but the hearts of my husband and children who partecipated with me in 2017. We worked as a group in Shima onsen area, particulary in Hinatami, doing performance, taking photographs, interviewing people and creating installations. This was alterated with an everyday life in Hinatami - sleeping, taking a bath, fighting bugs, discovering leeches, enjoying the nature and walks. My children were still small, but they remember to this day the wild monkeys roaming around, the hamburger they ate in Hato ryokan and the luscious nature and dam. We were lucky to stay in the Hinatami Kominkan for more than month, where we created our work and also connected to other artists and the community. I hope that our work could also touch somebody as much as we were touched by the creative process. Even though we live in Europe now, we hope to come back one day, when the travel is possible again and wish everybody the strength in these hard times.

皆様、お元気でしょうか？中之条ビエンナーレ初参加の豊田朝美と申します。
今回出展した『たくさんの分水嶺／考え続ける人へ』という作品は、次の様なメッセージを込めて作りました。

　コロナという抗えない流れに私たちは巻き込まれました。生活様式が激変し、まだその変化についていけないと困惑しています。
　人の歴史を辿ると、ポジティブにもネガティブにも、それまでの暮らしがガラッと変る転換点（＝分水嶺）がいくつもあるとわかりました。
　私たちは今、その分水嶺の一つに立っています。どうやってこれを越えていくのか。越えた先の世界を良いものにすることができるのか。考えて、考え続けた先に未来を開く力があると信じています。

　今、日本では先の見えないコロナ禍によって、多くの人が不安を抱えたままの生活を続けています。大変辛い、試練の時期です。
コロナ禍に対してARTは直接的な解決方法を提示することは出来ませんが、ARTだからこそできるユニークで前向きな提案方法はあると捉え、今回の作品を作りました。
この分水嶺をどうやって越えていくのか、私たち1人1人に何ができるのか、作品を見る人が考えるきっかけになれたら幸いです。大切なのは諦めずに考え続けることです。

I think of Nakanojo when the rain clouds start to gather in Vienna. Developing a a site-specific work without ever having felt the place physically is definitely a new experience. Through an intensive exchange a very physical work was created. Therefore my work reflects a loss of artistic authorship. Realising this, touches me & there comes the rain again. The body as an archive, which is not only bound to one place, but transcends across countries & generations noticeable in every moment. Thx!

One of the biggest regrets I have in recent years has been not personally participating in the Nakanojo Bienniale in '19.
I didn't receive the funds I had requested and whithout it, would have been too much for my financial!
Now, a big thought is the regret of not being there that year. Now that I would have the possibility (also financially), the distances are much longer than before.
During the lockdown, I am sure, I have dreamt about Nakanojo.
I hope one day, to go there, not only with dreams

These times make us value the community of Nakanojo, where everything works in balance toward artistic goals - it is so precious, and every space and artwork and new friendship seems to encapsulate such a special feeling imbued with the locality! Particularly dear to us were all the experiences gifted to us by local artists, that were source of inspiration also for the music of our installation. We are looking forward to more art making and art sharing in the future!

この分断の時節、改めて土地と人、関係性の重要性に立ち返る瞬間が多く訪れているように感じます。日常でありながら非日常でもあるような、子ども時代に戻るような、ぽかんと空いたエアポケットにぎゅっと多様な人間のエキスが注ぎ込まれたような中之条ビエンナーレの日々は、今でも特別な時間として思い出されます。まずは元気で、希望を見据えながらそれぞれの歩みを進めていきましょう。

いつもあなたのことを思い出します。迫り来る山々、不思議な青の輝く湖、星空と眼下に広がる雲海、動物たちの声…。あなたからもたらされた豊かな日々と温かな人たちとの素晴らしい出会いは、今もなお新しいつながりを生み出し続けています。この繋がっていく輪を次の誰かに渡せるように、大きなリレーの中の小さなひとりとして、「作ること」を続けていこうと思います。

今日、目の前に映る情景よりも、個人の内面に灯る希望という光を見つけ、育て続けることの必要性を世界中の人々が共通して感じているのではないかと思います。
私自身、創作そのものがその作業の繰り返しのように感じながら表現を試みてきました。そしてそれは内面を灯す光の道を描きました。
芸術は言葉を超えた感覚として、直接人々の心にある種の音を響かせることができるものだと思っています。
中之条ビエンナーレの作品たちが美しい音色を奏で、人々の心に灯火のように響きますよう、海を越えてお祈りしております。

In 2019, I first time went to Nakanojo as a Taiwanese artist assistant. I recognized the outstanding artists from all over the world. The time I worked with them quite pleasant. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I couldn't show up there. The pandemic in past two years let us know the importance of healthy.Possessing the safe environment and the healthy of mental and physical, so that it can put us into creation entirely.The pandemic will be past finally, expecting someday we can meet together.

中之条の豊かで美しい自然と温かい人々が大好きです。六合で滞在制作した日々は、今でもとても大切な思い出です。私が中之条ビエンナーレに作家として参加したのは2015年ですが、その後も毎回中之条ビエンナーレに行くたびに、帰ってきた気持ちになります。
コロナ禍で大変な時と思いますが、今年の開催も楽しみにしています。

中之条で過ごした時間を、忘れることが出来ません。こういう世界的な状況であるからこそ、中之条、そして、中之条ビエンナーレは、唯一無二の場所であり時間である、と感じます。谷間の、幾重もの襞のような空間のあちこちに、魅惑的な時間が静かに、そして力強く息づいていました。作品を探して、広大な会場を走り回った経験は、かけがえのないものです。中之条という場所としっかりと向かい合って、また参加することができる時が来ることを、心から願っています。

今回、オープニングイベントやパフォーマンス、作品展示やグッズ販売、氷染ワークショップなど様々な形で参加させていただきました。
訪れる度に、中之条の美しく豊かな自然に癒され、街の人の温かさに触れることができ短期間ではありましたが、もう一つ故郷ができたような感覚です。
自然と人とアートが紡ぐ大地のビエンナーレ。アーティストたちの魂の声が森の奥から聞こえてきます…
