In Spanish, the expression “dar a luz” refers to the moment of a baby’s birth. However, the literal translation would be “to give or donate light.” Giving birth is a unique moment that holds many mysteries, as I was able to experience myself during the recent birth of my daughter. In 2023, while a few months pregnant, I visited the Nakanojo Biennale. It was a beautiful moment to meditate on the life growing within me and on how it would also change me as an artist. In reference to this year’s theme, “Mountain of Light,” I felt it was related to that experience, so my work is a series of poetic and imaginary characters that reflect that moment of creation and inner meditation, where the setting was inspired by an onsen.
