心の安らぎ−国や地域で異なる平和のかたち Peace of Mind

終戦から80年。いまだ世界では戦争や紛争が続いているが、改めて「平和とは何か」を考えたい。

46か国、5歳から97歳の320名の方々に、「日常で心の安らぎを感じる時」や「彼らにとっての平和の意味」を尋ねた。そこには、人々が感じる様々な「平和」があった。

作品の素材は、「手板」と「竹」である。手板は、それぞれの木目が異なることから、様々な平和への願いを象徴するものとして使用した。日本の七夕では、願いを書いた短冊を竹に吊るす。この習わしに因んで、人々の「平和」への想いをこの竹に託して表現した。

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, but there are many countries around the world still suffering from war and disaster. This work considers the idea of peace and what it stands for in today’s world.

I asked over 300 people, aged 5 to 97, from 46 different countries to tell me what “peace” means to them or to describe a moment of peace in their daily life. Their words are written on thin wooden boards called teita that were traditionally used to record trade between people and hung in a bamboo dome symbolizing hope and a bright future.

In the calm, harmonious environment of Nakanojo, I hope everyone is inspired to think about what peace means to them personally, and to remember those whose lives are still affected by conflict.
