Shapes of Transition Shapes of Transition
Using the atmosphere of the former Sawatari-kan during its days of operation as a starting point, this installation reconstructs the time and memories that once flowed through the inn, through sculpture, video, and sound. As someone from the Agatsuma District, the scenery of this place overlaps with the hot spring towns I grew up with, becoming a key inspiration for the work. Taking a cue from the culture of “agariyu,” a custom of gradually returning to everyday life after bathing, the piece explores a gradation of body and time, inviting a sense of lingering stillness in contrast to the accelerating pace of the present.
