Can we avoid “What a Civilized City”? Can we avoid “What a Civilized City”?
At the center of the exhibition space—conceived as a vast water surface—floats a large life ring. Like a fountain standing in the middle of a city, the ring offers salvation to anyone. However, while the fountain gathers the city’s preferred “inward-looking gaze,” the life ring functions as a device that, even in the face of mortal fear, assists in escaping outward. The ring offers only temporary reprieve—a fragile suspension of the body amid a sinking world. Seated upon it, the viewer encounters fragments: the ship of fools that expelled the mad from the city, or attempts to flee from an island nation. By weaving and collaging these fragments from their own perspective, they may begin to seek out means of resistance.
