私は石で彫刻をつくっている。
石は硬くて重い。
簡単に彫りだすことができない分、私は長い時間を石と共に過ごす。
つくりたいかたちも、自身が彫刻家としてやりたいことも、表面を浚(さら)うだけでは何も見えてはこない。寡黙な石と正面から向き合うには、自分自身と深く向き合うことが必要だ。石という圧倒的な存在は、私に強い意思と柔軟な思考を与えてくれている。
石を彫り始めてから暫くの間は、稲妻や火花や波など定型を持たぬまま瞬時に失われる美しい現象をかたちにしたいと考え、創作していた。儚さを、対極にある強固な石で表現することに興味があった。
何時しか、かたちとはなんだろうという根本的な問いが大きくなった。
かたちあるものや、目に見えるものしか触れることができない。しかしドーナツの穴のように触れることができず実在のかたちが無くても、そこにかたちを見ることはできる。
内側と外側や、実と虚、互いに関係を結ぶことで確かにそこにかたちは在る。
同じように、空間と彫刻が関係を結ぶことで、触れることは叶わずともこの世界の何かを捉えることができるのではないかと思う。
近年は、最小の多角形である三角形を構成し、関わり合って生まれるかたちをつくることに取り組んでいる。
点を打ち、線を刻むように石を彫る。私は石と向き合い、そのまわりの世界と関係を結ぶ。
I make sculptures from stone.
The stone is hard and heavy.
I spend a lot of time with stones because it is not easy to carve.
I can’t see anything that I want to create or what I want to do as a sculptor just by sculpting the surface. In order for me to face the silent stone, I need to face myself deeply. The overwhelming presence of stones gives me a strong heart and flexible thinking.
For a while after I started carving stones, I wanted to create beautiful phenomena such as lightning, sparks, and waves that would be lost instantly without having a fixed form. I was interested in expressing the fragility with the opposite strong stones.
At some point, I had a fundamental question of what the shape was.
I can only touch what is shaped and what is visible. But like a donut hole, I can’t touch it, and even if it doesn’t have a real shape, I can see it there.
There is certainly a form there by connecting the inside and the outside, the real and the imaginary, and each other.
In the same way, I think that by connecting space and sculpture, it is possible to capture something in this world without touching it.
In recent years, I have been working on forming the smallest polygon, the triangle, and creating a form that is born by being involved.
Make dots and carve stones like carving lines. I confront the stone and connect with the world around it.
