私が芸術を通してできることは、失われそうなもの、残したいものを形におこし、半永久的に壊れず遠くの未来に届けることだと考えています。素材として扱う土や砂は、膨大な情報社会を生きている私たちにとって「そこに在る・ここにいる」ことを認識させてくれます。
土や粘土、砂を焼き、形が生まれたのは、漆と同じ縄文時代です。どれだけの月日が経ち、現代に科学的な発展が起きようとも、この素材は今日も変わらない姿で私たちの目の前にありつづけ、形を保つことができます。私はその行為と結果を「時の痕跡を残す術」として捉えています。セラミックベースの作品群は、自身の想像/創造していたものとは異なり、自分の思う形では還元されることはなく、内と外の曖昧さや予想外の変容、空気と空虚を含み性質の変化を遂げ、新鮮な出会いとして目の前に立ち現れます。
I believe that what I can achieve through art is to give form to things that are at risk of being lost, to things I want to preserve, and to deliver them to the distant future in a form that will not break for almost eternity. The materials I use, such as earth and sand, remind us of the significance of ‘being there’ and ‘being here,’ which is something we, living in this vast information society, sometimes forget.
The act of firing clay, earth, and sand to give them shape originated in the Jomon period, just like lacquer. No matter how many years pass, or how much scientific advancement occurs in modern times, these materials continue to remain before us in their unchanged form, maintaining their shape. I see this act and result as a ‘way of leaving traces of time.’
The ceramic-based works, unlike what I originally imagined or created, do not return to the shape I envisioned. They undergo unexpected transformations, with the ambiguity of both the inside and outside, the inclusion of air and emptiness, and the changes in their nature. They appear before me as a fresh encounter.
