私の作品は東京の都市空間を歩くことから生まれる。そこには美学があり、通勤する人々の何年にも渡る迷宮の旅がそれを示唆している。静まることのない複雑なコミュニティ。私は版画のプロセスが持つある開かれた可能性を利用して、「多孔質」なコラージュを制作する。また、コーディングとアルゴリズムを用いて、動き、変化、持続時間に関わる都会的な瞬間へと来場者が参加できるような仕組みを制作している。
しかし昨年のパンデミックの影響により都市機能はすべて溶けてしまい、周りの人々はそれぞれの部屋の中に閉じこもってしまった。それと同時に、オンラインでは新しいコミュニティがZoomなどによって爆発的に増えた。孤立する中でのこの繋がりは、外面に向いていた関心を段々と内面へ向けさせているのではないかと思うようになった。私はオンラインに広がる街中で、別の意味で通勤していたのだろうか。それとも、普段は私の生活空間との境界を尊重している外の世界（つまり同僚や生徒たちなど）が、この親密な皮膜を抜けて私の空間に入り込んできたのだろうか。私の肌はいつまで外のコミュニティに対して不浸透性を保つのだろう？
たとえ曾祖父母の村に住み続けることを選んだとして（選ばざるを得なかったとして）、そのような状態であったとしても、つまりどのような人間であれ、現代のグローバルシステムに巻き込まれている。この一年を経験し必要に迫られたことで、以前の都市の考え方と決裂した作品を制作した。
My practice emerges from physically moving through the urban fabric of Tokyo. There is an aesthetic suggested by the labyrinthine journeys of commuters over days and years. A complex community in motion. I use the open possibilities of the printmaking process to create “porous” collages that allow the flow of urban experience to pass through them without resorting to a fully fixed state through the capacity of a printing matrix to repeat with difference. I also use coding and algorithms to create combinations that allow viewers to participate in the movement, change, and duration in these urban moments.
In the course of the last year however, due to the pandemic, all of the tissue of the urban machine melted and the community beyond my front door found itself largely confined to the interiority of their own small dwelling. Online, however, new communities exploded. I wondered how this connectedness in isolation was turning my exterior attention to the interior. Was I commuting some other way through the detritus of the online city? Or was it more the case that the world outside that normally respected the boundaries of my dwelling—my colleagues, my students, now passed through this intimate membrane into my space. For how much longer would my skin be impermeable to the collective?
Even if one chooses (or is forced) to continue to live in the village of one’s great-grandparents, even in that state, that is to say, any human being, is entangled in a global system in our time. This year was spent making works that ruptured with previous concerns by reasons of necessity.
