Karin van der Molen’s artistic practice is a blend of sculpture and installation, ephemeral and semi-permanent, rooted in a profound connection with ecology and society.
Her project based work delves into the intricate relationships between place, matter, human and nonhuman, with a special interest in historical and social perspectives. She explores a wide range of materials and techniques, fitting to the project she is working on. She equally enjoys working with locally sourced natural materials, textiles and wood as well as video and recycled objects.
Her socially engaged art practice extends to the foundation of and participation in two artist collaboratives (Zest Artist Collective-ZAC, and The White Flag Art Collaboration) – the latter informed by her background in Human Rights studies.
As an environmental and site-specific artist, Karin van der Molen’s work not only explores the physicality of place, her work is also often informed by the socio-cultural fabric that defines it. The dynamic interplay between the artist, locally sourced materials and the environment itself, leads to a continuous process of improvisation, and exchange. Her art serves as a catalyst for introspection and prompts a reevaluation of our role within the intricate web of nature, culture and contemporary challenges on different levels. Her practice as a nomad artist serves as a gateway to new environments, cultures, and people. Her work has been exhibited on the international stage, transcending boundaries and continents, showcasing her ability to adapt her practice to diverse contexts.
