嘉春佳

ある日の記憶をたどるとき、誰かのことを思うとき、着ていた衣服を覚えていることがあるように、古着は着ていた個人のある時期の出来事や記憶と結びつく。スウェーデンのある街の地下で行われていたフリーマーケット・ロッピスで目にした、山積みになって売られていた古着を今でも覚えている。今は誰も着ていない、けれど過去に誰かが着ていた古着の山は、そこに人の身体がなくとも、着ていた誰かの存在を強く想起させた。その場で50着を購入し、現地で作品を制作したことをきっかけに、さまざまな地域の芸術祭や展覧会に参加しながら、古着を用いた作品制作を続けている。
私は、自分や他者の記憶、日常として捉えられる時間の多くが、記録には残らず消えていくものであることを前提に、制作を通して、その時間を形にしたいと考えている。編む・縫う・畳むといった手仕事は、ひとが生活する中で、必要な道具をこしらえること、ものを修繕し残すこと、日々の暮らしを継続させることと深く結びついてきたのだと思う。このことに着目し、収集した古着を手仕事によって再構成し、人々の暮らしの記憶を形に起こす制作を行っている。

Just as we sometimes remember the clothes we wore when tracing back a memory of a certain day or thinking about someone else, old clothes are associated with events and memories of a certain period in the life of the individual who wore it. I still remember a pile of old clothes I saw at the flea market called Loppis in the city of Sweden. The piles of old clothes that no one was wearing, but that someone had worn in the past, strongly reminded me of the existence of someone who had worn them, even though there was no human body. I purchased 50 pieces of old clothes and created artworks. Since then, I have continued to create artworks using old clothes and participate in various local art festivals and exhibitions.
I assume that most of the memories of myself and others, and the time that we perceive as everyday life, are not recorded and disappear. Through my artworks, I hope to give form to this time. Handicrafts such as knitting, sewing, and folding are deeply connected to the making of necessary tools, the repair and preservation of things, and the continuation of daily life. Focusing on this, I reconstruct old clothes by handwork and create artworks that give shape to the memories of people’s daily lives.
