The concept of ‘beauty’ is present in our lives in many ways. It is considered a basic value in human life, and to this day most of us believe that beauty is the main value in any artistic field.
In art, what is beautiful enjoys precedence over values such as what is real, good, just, etc. However, the debates and questions about the qualities of this basic but elusive value apparently began with the first Greek philosophers, and continue to this day.
Still, the concept of beauty has always been associated with the world of art, and my interest in this subject led me to an unexpected approach presented by Oscar Wilde in a fascinating article from 1891, ‘Intentions’. In this paper, Wilde offers a proposition on “beauty,” which seems illogical (to say the least), in which he argues that nature imitates art more that art imitates nature.
Wilde claims that until Monet and Pissarro did not paint the typical London fog, the fog did not exist at all. “Things exist because we see them, and what we see, and how we see it, depends on the Arts that have influenced us. ….One does not see anything until one sees its beauty. Then, and then only, does it come into existence….. At present, people see fogs, not because there are fogs, but because poets and painters have taught them the mysterious loveliness of such effects…..”
The idea is that our perception of life is changed by art, so that nature sometimes seems to imitate paintings we have seen before, giving us the emotions we felt when looking at those paintings. When that happens, life seems to imitate art.
To see the beauty of something is to understand its own distinctive logic. This logic is a starting point in my art work, and serves as the basis for focusing on the properties of the raw material, its history, its conventional use and its integration into the work of art that I create.
These connections motivate me to seek collaborations with artists, scientists and researchers, because the curiosity and creativity that are inherent in research and the sciences fill me with endless artistic inspiration.
I believe that artists (as well as scientists) do not create reality; they only give it meaning and interpretation. I can only hope that the interpretation I give to my art work will also be of interest to others by revealing an additional, different perspective on reality.
