人間が創造した世界の中の動物を題材に、やきものの表現を探求しています。
私の作品には多くの動物が登場します。しかしながら、動物そのものを表現しようというよりは、人間が長い時間を掛けて作り上げてきた、動物の持つイメージをモチーフとして表現していると言った方が良いでしょう。つまり、神話や伝承、物語、様々な表現の中に象徴・寓意として登場する動物です。私がつくるということは、人間の豊かな思考の営みに触れて、現実の世界に繋ぎとめる行為でもあります。
やきものの動物たちは虚ろです。だからこそ、私は表面にこだわります。表面を細かくこつこつ彫り続けることで、そこにはいくつものイメージが重なり、空っぽな動物たちにも意味が生まれます。部分が合わさり、次第に全体が意味を持って現れる。その繰り返しの中で、象徴的な動物たちは、私たちが認識する世界を少しずつ広げてくれるように思うのです。
I’m exploring the representation of ceramic art using animals that have lived in the various worlds created by humans as motifs.
Although many animals appear in my works, I don’t try to make them as lifelike as real animals. I represent animals in myths, folklore, stories, and various other creative works that humans have created over a long period of time. In other words, the animals I create are symbols and allegories. My process of creating is also to touch the rich activity of human thought and to connect it to the real world.
The animals in my ceramics are empty and have superficial structures. Therefore, I am obsessed with the surface. By carving the surface of the empty animals in detail and obsessively, various images overlap on the surface, and the empty animals are given meanings. The parts are combined, and gradually the whole appears with meaning. In that repetition, I believe that the symbolic animals gradually expand our perception of the world.
