大島移住は自己の造形表現の意欲に再び灯をともしてくれた。豊かな自然環境が多くのインスピレーションを与えてくれ、絵画やオブジェの制作に夢中になった。それはいつしかインスタレーショの表現へと変わっていく。しばらくは感覚的で自由な表現に終始していたが、やがて自分が体験した事故や病気などが契機となって作品が生まれるようになってきた。
コロナ禍における閉塞感から生まれたのが「線材意識体」である。２０代の頃にもあった自分の存在が消えていく様な恐怖が再び私に覆い被さってきた。そんな時、ひたすら鉄線を捻って繋ぎグリッドが三次元的に増殖していくことが、大きな安心感や充足感につなかった。そのうちグリッドは自由な方向へと増殖し始め、いろいろな場所でのインスタレーションになっていった。
線材意識体は潜在意識が三次元化したものとも言える。鉄線やアルミ線をひたすら捻って繋いでいく行為の中で、自分に眠っているあらゆる想念が頭の中を駆け巡り、座禅の時に感じるような瞑想状態になっていく。
「芸術」とは何のか？自分にとって最も重要な関心を抱かせる概念だが、それが何であるのか今だ私は説明できない。少なくとも自分が芸術だと信じている制作の行為は自分を泥沼や暗黒から救いあげてくれていることは間違いなさそうだ。
デジタル化・AIの進展は人間を救う反面、身体性を弱体化していく様な気がしている。「線材意識体」では身体性の復権も重要なテーマとなる。日常的な行為の連続が潜在意識と繋がり、新たな生成へと導く。まだしばらくは「線材意識体」は世界に増殖を続けそうである。
Moving to Oshima rekindled my desire for creative expression. The rich natural environment gave me a lot of inspiration, and I became absorbed in creating paintings and objects. Before I knew it, this changed into installation art. I had always focused on expressing myself in a sensory and free way, but eventually, accidents and illnesses that befell me led to the creation of my works.
The “wire consciousness” was born from the feeling of stagnation during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was once again overcome by the fear that my existence would disappear, which I had felt before. At that time, simply twisting and connecting iron wires and watching the grid grow in three dimensions gave me a great sense of relief and fulfillment. Eventually, the grid broke down and began to grow in free directions, and I began to develop it as an installation in various places.
The wire consciousness can be said to be a three-dimensionalization of the subconscious. As I continued to twist and connect the wires, all the thoughts that were sleeping inside me ran through my head, and I entered a meditative state similar to that felt during zazen.
The wave of digitalization brought about by advances in AI feels like it is weakening the human body. In “Wire Consciousness”, the restoration of physicality is also an important theme. The succession of everyday actions connects with the subconscious, leading to new generation. It looks like “Wire Consciousness” will continue to proliferate around the world for some time yet.
