１９歳の春、ヨーロッパを旅行した。その旅で訪れたノートルダム寺院の厳粛な空間にあるステンドグラスのバラ窓。油絵かの学生だった私は、その光に満たされたバラ窓を生きている絵だと感じた。ステンドグラスは注ぎ込む光によって多彩に表情を変える。朝・昼・夜、そして、晴れた日、曇りの日など差し込む光の具合で，それは全く違った物に見える。多くの教会のステンドグラスは、聖母マリアやキリストなどの聖人を表現した具象画である。しかし、聖人たちが描かれたガラスの背後から力強く差し込んだ太陽の光により、彼らの図像は抽象的な光の模様として大聖堂の壁面や床に投影される光の効果で満たされた荘厳な大聖堂の空間は、私に取って光が作り出す芸術そのものだった。この体験以来、私の作品は光が素地となった。光は音のように無形なものだ。しかし、その効果は日常において私達と深く結びついている。空間と光。この２つが関わる世界をインスタレーションで作り続けている。
When I was nineteen years old I traveled to Europe in the spring. I visited Notre Dame Cathedral and in that solemn space I saw the stained glass Rose Window. I was a student of oil painting at that time and the window filled with light looked like a living painting. The appearance of stained glass changes according to the light that streams through it. A stained glass window looks totally different depending on the quality of the light that shines through it-Morning, afternoon or evening light, a sunny day or cloudy day. Many churches’ stained glass windows have figurative images of the Virgin Mary, Christ and other saints. However, by the power of the sun shining through the stained glass, these figures are projected as abstract patterns of light was essentially art created by light. After this experience light became the primary medium for my work. Light is as immaterial as sound, but we are deeply connected to the effects of light in our daily lives. Space and light-I continue to create installations that involve these two elements.
