Anita Gratzer
出身地 : オーストリア
活動地 : 群馬

After an apprenticeship as furrier and afterwards as photographer, Anita Gratzer studied at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria. Growing up in the Austrian alps, she received her first scholarships from the Austrian Cultural Ministry while still studying in Krakow and Paris. Afterwards the State Scholarship of Austria for Photography followed when she lived for two years in New York as an artist.
Since a couple of years, with multiple residencies in Japan, Korea, China and Europe she concentrates on the creation of wearable sculptures made from paper. Using antique washi the design often relates to traditional Japanese cuts and craft methods. In her work she constantly deals with the topic of clothing as shelter. As a boundary of the inner self and external perception as well as the gender identity which goes along with it.
In a second step, using the means of analogue black and white portrait photography, the experimental garments are worn by selected people which turns the materiality of the historical writings to a refuge for the users. Elements become paper prostheses or wearable sanctuaries of the intellect.
In case of opportunity the final part is a performative presentation based on methods of tableau vivant, kata (かた movement patterns of Noh) or special Kabuki pose mie (見え). Herby the storytelling of the art work deals with themes of inner emigration based on cultural norms and are sometimes extended with masks and moulages, amalgamated from beeswax and taxidermy objects.
Since 2019 she owns a studio and house near Fujioka, Gunma.
