表現とは他者への暴力性を少なからず内包する行為であると捉え、室井は自身も表現者として纏ってしまうであろう暴力性と対峙しながら作品の制作を続けている。
2009年より、グラフィティの影響に基づき、路上で作品制作を始める。郊外に日用品などのマテリアルを配置することで出来上がった風景を、あたかも発見者かのように記録写真を撮る。こうした制作を続けるなかで、大学在籍中にアール・ブリュットから強く影響を受けるものの、自身はそのような作品を生み出すことができないことを自覚し、アカデミックな現場なりのアール・ブリュットを模索。これまで、夢のお告げや執拗な収集をテーマにしたり、肉体労働者として働きながらその抑圧を制作の糧にすることをおこなってきたが、その行為をアールブリュットの手法の搾取として捉え、内省や懺悔を含んだ表現を展開する。
近年は他者や自身の思い出に焦点を当て、絵画・インスタレーションとして新たな物語を生成したり、記憶が曖昧であるからこそ起きるイメージの飛躍を作品に取り入れている。また、展示をおこなう際には、現場で実際に手を動かしながら空間をしつらえることを大事にしている。
そのほか、『路上観察学会』の現在形としての『徒歩派』、不要なものを感性の力で商品化する『一周回ってつらい』、1日1制作を日課としたアーティストコレクティブ『とうふと蟹クラブ』としても活動。茨城県にて郊外のエッセンスを内包したギャラリースペース『APどのう』の運営もおこなっている。
Muroi believes that expression is an act that includes violence toward others, and he continues to work while confronting the violence that he, as an artist, may wear.
In 2009, inspired by graffiti, he began creating works on the street. He takes photographs of landscapes created by arranging materials such as daily necessities in the suburbs, as if he were the one who discovered them.
In the process, he was strongly influenced by Art Brut while in college, but became aware that he did not have the ability to create such works, and began to seek Art Brut in academic settings. He has used the prophecies of dreams, compulsive collecting, and the oppression of working as a manual laborer to feed his work.
In recent years, he has focused on the memories of others and himself, creating new narratives as paintings and installations, incorporating into his work the leaps in imagery that arise from the ambiguity of memory. He also emphasizes the importance of actually working with his hands on site to create spaces for his exhibitions.
In addition, he is also active in the “Tohoha” as the current form of “Street Observation Society（Rojokansatsugakkai）,” “Isshuumawattetsurai” to commercialize unnecessary things with the power of sensibility, and “Tofutokaniclub” an artist collective that makes it a daily routine to create one piece of artwork a day. He also operates the gallery space “AP Donou” in Ibaraki Prefecture, which encompasses the essence of the suburbs.
