Well-Lit Room

Yusuke Muroi Yusuke Muroi

I’m getting ready to say goodbye to this ryokan (Japanese inn), which will be taken down after the exhibition. It has stood empty for almost 30 years, and now, for the first time in a long while, it’s being opened up again. I’d like to find a way to engage with the building that shows some care and respect for its past. There are signs of the family who used to live here—not just in its role as an inn, but in small things like children’s drawings left on the walls. As I clean and set up the space, I hope to highlight these quiet traces that might otherwise go unnoticed. Being the first and last person to exhibit here feels meaningful. I want to be thoughtful in how I act, so I can be someone this house and this place can accept.
