私は女性職人への関心から中之条の養蚕の伝統について考えるようになった。明治～昭和において、女性はこの地で蚕を育て、絹を製造し、世界へ送り出した。農業地域の冬季の経済活動と混ざり合う伝統工芸。
不定期な労働パターンや、自宅が職場となることにより、「内職」とみなされてしまう女性職人の日常。完全無欠ではない、日々の子育て。これらは「家族を織り成す」と考え、家庭という繭に包み込まれるリズムを連想させる作品を作りたいと思った。外出自粛後に待っている新世界のために、変容と、再び現れる可能性を提案する空間となる。
I have an ongoing concern with women artisans, which led me to think about Nakanojo’s sericulture heritage. In the Meiji and Showa era, women were a vital economic force here, raising silkworms and preparing silk that left Yokohama, destined for the world. I reflected on traditions of craft that commingle with winter economies in agricultural communities, and workers who are deemed occasional due to their shift patterns or their work
location within the home. These thoughts mixed with themes of weaving families through imperfect daily nurture and invented traditions. I wanted to make a work that paid attention to the cocooning rhythms of home. A space of metamorphosis and reemerging, for a new world that awaits us, after the lockdown.
