想像するかたち

人間が考え出した車や飛行機の形は、何故あのような形になったのでしょうか。これは風の抵抗を減らしたり、空を飛ぶために工夫された形です。そして、これらの形を考えるとき、私たちは自然界の中に手がかりを求めて来ました。この彫刻は、作家が針金を螺旋状に巻いて面を作り、その無数の面を一つ一つ繋げて形作ったものです。線から面、面から立体へと変化し、彫刻として姿を現します。作家は頭で描いた形を実際に見える形に作り上げます。そして鑑賞者も、欠けているように見える空白部分や見えない部分を、自分の想像力で補いながら作品を見ています。自然の法則によって作られた形を辿ることは、最も美しいフォルムを想像することに繋がるのだと感じます。

Imagined forms.

Why did the shapes of cars and airplanes conceived by humans take the shapes they did? These shapes were devised to reduce wind resistance and to fly. When considering these forms, we have looked to the natural world for clues. In this sculpture, the artist creates surfaces by spiraling wire and then joining each of the countless surfaces to create a form. The sculpture is transformed from line to surface, and from surface to volume, and then appears as a sculpture. The artist translates the form he has drawn in his mind into an actual visible form. The viewer, in turn, uses their imagination to fill in the blank spaces that appear to be missing or invisible. I feel that tracing forms created by the laws of nature leads to imagining the most beautiful forms.
